Hi, there is a weird problem with my wordfence install, everytime that I try to activate 2FA for a new user, it just pops a message: “An error was encountered while trying to activate two-factor authentication. Please try again.”.

Logs show nothing, I tried to check server time but it’s OK. For old users the 2FA is activated and working correctly. How can I fix this?

Are you using the same authenticator app for all users? I’ve seen on some sites that trying a different authenticator works. I typically see Authy or Google’s Authenticator app used.

If that doesn’t work, in the diagnostics under Time, be sure the Wordfence Network and server time are within seconds of each other.

    Hi,

We’ve tried Google Auth and Authy, both give errors. Those are the times:

    Wordfence Network Time
    2020-05-13 22:47:39 UTC
    Server Time
    2020-05-13 22:47:40 UTC
    Wordfence Network Time Offset
    – 1 second
    NTP Time Offset
    – less than 1 second
    TOTP Time Source
    Wordfence Network
    WordPress Time Zone
    UTC+0

The big problem is that the client is getting angry with the lack of a solution, and agains, there’s not a single clue of what’s happening, so I can’t even debug it.

Hi @phalkmin, what kind of storage for your database do you use? If MyISAM – try to convert it to InnoDB. I had a problem with something different, but I remember that in the past, I also couldn’t activate 2FA in Wordfence (so I gave it up). Today I manually converted the database to InnoDB – to solve another issue – now I tried to activate 2FA, and it works! 🙂

I created a tutorial on how to perform this database storage engine “migration.” If somebody is eager to try it, here is the link:

    @bazantik That didn’t work.

It’s already a week without an answer from @wfscott , I think that I will just install another plugin, as it’s clear that Wordfence dont care about support.

    It’s a pity.
As for different solutions – I’ve been using the Keyy plugin, very convenient (no need to type username and password, you just “scan” code with a smartphone app).
