Errors grabbing RSS Feeds

    I’m currently using bebop to grab 100+ RSS feeds from twitter (Can’t use Twitter oAuth because the buddypress profiles are just representations of politicians, not the politicians themselves.) It seems as though the server cron is missing most the feeds most of the time. ( Example: “RSS Error: A feed could not be found at http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=john_burris. This does not appear to be a valid RSS or Atom feed”) I’ve got it set to run every 5 minutes, but some users may not have any items added for hours at a time. When they do import, they import all of the activity missed at once.

    Is there any way to increase the reliability of the RSS feeds importing? Why would bebop find the feed URL invalid at random?

    PS – I know Twitter is dropping RSS support in the spring, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. The solution will likely involve converting the json to an rss format so I can continue to feed tweets to buddypress this way.

    Hi,

    The RSS feed plugin is a generic RSS importer. It does its best to grap the data from RSS feeds, but because all RSS feeds are different it is impossible to guarantee it will be able to import data from every type of feed.

    If you are just wanting to use RSS, then there are much more suitable plugins than bebop. May I suggest something like lifestream – they have individual RSS feeds for each platform, and each is customised to fit that platform specifically.

    Thanks for the response Dale! I understand that the feed importer is fairly simple, but the plugin gives the ability to attach feeds to buddypress press profiles and add entries to the activity stream – something not yet developed for lifestream (at least to my knowledge.)

    I’ll tinker with simplepie cache time and wordpress memory limit in wp-config – it seems as though others have had issues with feeds not being detected reliably (with simplepie and wordpress generally). It’s been three days since I flushed the error log and I’m already up to over 1000 pages of errors in the bebop admin.

    Thanks for the input – and let me know if you have any revelations of this issue. If my tinkering results in any improvement, I’ll let you know.

    Hi,

    For what it’s worth, if you are comfortable with development then why not copy the original RSS extension and create your own – its a pretty simple process – just follow the guides in the github wiki (https://github.com/lncd/bebop/wiki).

    If you need any more help just let me know.

    Hey Dale. Just following up on this. Turns out that I was just running up against Twitter’s api rate limit associated with request rss feeds. Simple Pie was doing it’s job. I’m going to try to build something to fit my specific needs. Using my Twitter app’s OAuth, I want to try and call the entire list of twitter screen names in custom profile fields and store what’s returned as new activity. Not sure about ins and outs. Will post any progress.
