Hello,
Thanks for reaching out.
For https://www.citizenlab.co/blog/case-study/centralised-community-engagement-leads-to-safe-and-impactful-participation-in-stirling/, the canonical URL in the page source is:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://https%3A%2F%2Fwww.citizenlab.co%2Fblog%2Fcase-study%2Fcentralised-community-engagement-leads-to-safe-and-impactful-participation-in-stirling%2F"/>
Can you share the actual URL of the post you have used in the canonical URL field in the Yoast SEO plugin?

Thanks for the feedback.
By default, Yoast SEO generates a self-referencing canonical URL. The plugin does this for you, everywhere on your site: single posts and pages, homepages, category archives, tag archives, date archives, author archives, etc. If you want to learn more about why we use self-canonical, please refer to this article.
In your case, since it is the same URL, you do not have to fill in that field. Please leave it blank. You only need to fill it if you want to use custom canonicals. If you want to create custom canonical tags for your pages different from the self-referencing canonical URL, you will have to do it manually (you can edit the canonical URL in the advanced tab of the Yoast SEO metabox).

Thanks for that info.
We have this post linked to two categories, how can I add the canonical URL to the post in the secondary category then?
You can set the custom canonical URL for the category the same way you do it posts in the advanced tab of the Yoast SEO metabox when you edit the specific category

Hey Maybellyne,
I’m afraid you didn’t get the question/problem.
The issue is not on the category page, but on the level of the article. It’s linked to two categories, so there’s two URLs generated. WordPress however only lets us edit 1 version, we can’t access the article in the other category it seems. Hence why we need to add the canonical URL, to make sure search engines index and favor the version we want.
Thanks for your clarification @sorenf. So, what happens when you edit the relevant blogpost and add the desired canonical URL using the Yoast SEO meta box?
We look forward to hearing from you.
We are going ahead and marking this issue as resolved due to inactivity. If you require any further assistance please create a new issue.
