Excluding core directory files from backup

Is there an easier way to exclude individual files from the core WordPress folder (for example, if I want to exclude non-wordpress files placed there by the hosting company).

I seem to recall that there used to be checkboxes for all the files in the core folder, am I misremembering? Do I really have to manually enter each one in the “exclude from backup” box?
