Exponential custom fields created on posts causing database issues

Love this plugin, but I’ve noticed it creates a new custom field on every post each time that post is updated.
I have some posts on my site that have over 100 of these on a single post.
It has created a massively inflated WP database size.
Is there any was to limit the custom fields the plugin creates on each post, to for example, 1?
