    First let me start off by saying I appreciate the work put into this plugin and know how hard it is to maintain and add features to projects like this! But since I don’t see anyone else talking about this problem and I see it as an issue, I’ll bring it up.

    Are you aware of the performance/speed issues your plugin? I am hosted on a dedicated server and have done some quick optimizations to your plugin to get it load a little faster and can get it to load around 0.439 seconds. When I was on a shared server this plugin alone took a full second to load. The older versions were much quicker but it’s come to a point where this plugin takes longer to load by itself than loading a full page with a similar plugin “Better WordPress External Links” that is fully configured.

    Here is a quick breakdown of one of my sites on the dedicated server tested using “P3 – Plugin Performance Profiler”

    David,

    Thanks for taking the time to investigate the performance and run your tests. I was not aware there was a performance problem like you illustrated. It looks like there may need to be some optimization needed after the changes over the past months.

    Question…. when you ran the tests where you strictly using the content, comments and text widgets or you had them configured to apply changes to the entire site (globally?)

    We have a similar issue with performance, External Links is the 2nd most resource intensive plugin on our site. We are going to have to disable it until this improves, but love the plugin so hope to be back soon!

    I’m currently reworking this plugin to address the performance issues. It has to do with how it is iterating the links globally and building a DOM each time. Very stupidly..

    New version 6.0 is out. It is a fraction of what it was previously. I’m embarrassed actually.

    Things should be much, much better now.
