This is my first attempt to add amazon-polly to my WordPress site, but as soon as I try to activate it I get this error:

Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/snargfyt/public_html/wp-content/plugins/amazon-polly/admin/class-amazonpolly-admin.php on line 382

PHP Version 5.6.36

Not sure what to do next.

Are you 100% that you are using PHP version 5.6?

This is what I’ve found so far.

/public_html/wp-content/plugins/amazon-polly/admin/class-amazonpolly-admin.php on line 382

382: if ( empty( get_option( ‘amazon_polly_access_key’ ) ) ) {

I thought the setup was for after installation, I do not have an amazon_polly_access_key yet, only my AWS3 keys.

Hi @snarp,
The plugin require AWS keys to work, you will need to provide AWS Secret Key and Access Key in main configuration page of the plugin. Only then it will work. You can find information about it here: https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/tutorials/add-voice-to-wordpress-polly/

Yes, my provider showed me how to upgrade to phpv7.
