Fatal error: Call to undefined function reset_mbstring_encoding()

    Hi,
    Installed WP on own server but have last days started getting the following:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function reset_mbstring_encoding() in […]/wp-includes/class-http.php on line 194

    Might be related to the (automagic) update to 3.8.1

    I have deactivated plugins and removed the little snippet of code that I had put in earlier.

    The error results in multiple problems including no-one being able to post comments and serious problems in the administration of the blog.

    In addition, I don’t know how to install plugins (like the Beta Tester) via the Dashboard in order to maybe get some help from updates.

    Help?
