Hi,
We would like some more information to help us understand the issue.
1. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.6? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.
2. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?
3. We had another recent release. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO, v15.7? If you update, does the issue resolve?
Same exact issue right now, weird timing. I literally just installed the free repo yoast seo about 10 min ago. Front end of the site is still up and active, but every page on the dashboard throws that fatal error.
The site is unfortunately not on WordPress 5.6, but I’m pretty blown away that that is a requirement…

Hi Kenny hope we can sort it out !!!
@kennyeliason We are sorry you’re having this issue. Per the forum guidelines, we ask that you please create a separate topic for the issue you are experiencing.
That way it’s easier to track issues and provide assistance on your specific concerns on your specific site. Plus, you will get your own alerts for the issue rather than someone else’s. You may make a new topic here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/plugin/wordpress-seo/#new-post.
Hi @ianhornby001
If you are unable to access your WordPress backend dashboard, there might be a plugin or theme conflict. You might need to disable the plugins folder via FTP so you can access the backend of your site again. You can follow the steps here — https://yoast.com/help/white-screen-when-activating-or-updating-plugin/
We would then recommend updating to the latest versions of your other plugins and themes, and then checking your WordPress version. You mentioned you are using WordPress 4.9.16. The Yoast SEO plugin supports the 2 latest WordPress versions (in this case, it would be 5.5 and 5.6), otherwise, it could definitely cause compatibility issues. You can review our plugin requirements here — https://yoast.com/help/plugin-requirements/
Once you update to a more recent version of WordPress, does the fatal error then resolve?
Hi Michael,
Thank you for the information.
I have never accessed a WordPress site via the FTP so a little nervous about that but seems straight forward.
Instead of renaming the file/folder plugins_old and for all of them to stop working can I not just somehow delete the install of Yoast?
Then update to 5.6 and download Yoast plugin again?
How would I go about doing this if this is possible?
Thank You for helping me.
@ianhornby001 Yes you can just remove the Yoast SEO plugin. It is located at /wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/
We have instructions on how to install/upgrade the plugin manually at the following link: https://yoast.com/help/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp.
