Hi 🙂
Thanks for posting your question.
Your server is using a version of PHP that’s below the WordPress minimum of 5.6.20 (7.4 is recommended). Some hosting dashboards allow you to change the PHP version yourself, others might require that you reach out to your hosts and request the change.

Hi Andrew @misplon, @killanear and it occured Tuesday afternoon. I have reached out to my hosting company and am not able to get through (I’ve been on hold for 4hrs now, have opened 2 online tickets, and am waiting on the LiveChat for about 2 hours now). Needless to say I am desperate to get this fixed and have my site up and running.
We don’t have FTP access (and I’m not familiar with what that is really, I’m quite a novice at all this). Is there any way to fix this and not have to wait on my hosting company??
I’m not the admin on the account, I just took over in trying to update the webpage and keep it current. I updated a SiteOrigin plug-in and BOOM the fatal error happened!
This is the second time I’ve done this– but last time I think our IT person fixed it and we don’t have one at the moment.
In all truth, I don’t even know what questions to ask I just know I need help. 🙁

We chatted with Sandy via email as it took a little while for the above reply to be approved. If you’re seeing Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context, please, check the PHP version being used on your server. 7.4 is recommended, 5.6.20 is the minimum supported by WordPress and therefore by SiteOrigin. Thanks 🙂
