    Hi – I have a client with three websites and BackWPup v5.2.1 installed. I logged on today to do the monthly backups and updates – and the screen of BackWPup is basically empty. No backups are listed (although the Backup history says there should be a log of ten pages to scroll) – a click on “Add new backup” does nothing – neither does a click on “Access Jobs” or “Backup Now”.

    Furthermore I received E-mails that there is a fatal error on all three websites. Here is the error code:

    Fehler-Details

    Can you please let me know what to do????

    Hi,

    Thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry to hear about the trouble across your sites.

    We’ve seen similar issues recently, and they are often related to outdated or corrupted plugin settings.

    Could you please update BackWPup to the latest version (5.2.3) and check if the issue persists? This version includes fixes that may prevent the error you’re experiencing.

    In the meantime, I’ve shared the details with our development team for review. If the issue continues even after updating, we’ll investigate further.

    Thanks again for your patience!

    So – I updated BackWPUp to the latest version (not a great idea, if you don’t have a backup at hand!) – and guess what: The entire site crashed. “Fatal Error” even on the Frontend (whereas before the error was only happening on the backend within the plugin)

    I activated the debug log and got the same error as above:

    [04-Jun-2025 12:26:21 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught TypeError: array_merge(): Argument #2 must be of type array, bool given in /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-content/plugins/backwpup/inc/class-install.php:47
    Stack trace:
    #0 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-content/plugins/backwpup/inc/class-install.php(47): array_merge()
    #1 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-content/plugins/backwpup/src/Plugin/Plugin.php(132): BackWPup_Install::activate()
    #2 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(324): WPMedia\BackWPup\Plugin\Plugin->init()
    #3 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(348): WP_Hook->apply_filters()
    #4 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-includes/plugin.php(517): WP_Hook->do_action()
    #5 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-settings.php(578): do_action()
    #6 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-config.php(118): require_once('/home/...')
    #7 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-load.php(50): require_once('/home/...')
    #8 /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-blog-header.php(13): require_once('/home/...')
    #9 /home/webseiten/domain/index.php(17): require('/home/kizegg9ei...')
    #10 {main}
    thrown in /home/webseiten/domain/neu/wp-content/plugins/backwpup/inc/class-install.php on line 47

    So now I manually deactivated BackWPUp via FTP to have the site running again.

    Do I have to look for an alternative Backup plugin or will you be able to fix that?

    Thanks,
    Astrid
