    …which reads like nonsense to me…

    This is different from, but similar to, an error previously reported that also prevent installation of the plug-in.

    It does install successfully on my (similar/non-identical) development version of the same (Multisite) site which is on PHP 5.5. The site where activation failed was recently upgraded from 5.3 to 5.4.
