• My site has developed an error in my theme causing it to display incorrectly. When I logged in I saw there was an update and tried to update. Also, tried to edit my theme. In all cases I get this error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /data/1/0/42/143/42958/user/43797/htdocs/wordpress1/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-nav-menus.php on line 1398

    Any suggestions?

    Bob

I’ve spent the afternoon trying to figure out how to do this. Thanks, but it’s beyond my technical expertise.

I downloaded something called Filezilla, but I don’t know how to use it, or what server I should be trying to connect to.

You would think that my hosting company, Network Solutions, could help, but they refuse.

If you can still log in, you can switch themes to see if that fixes the fatal error, but it sounds as though there is an infinite loop in something having to do with a menu, and the other theme might have the same trouble.

If you can’t log in to WordPress, you would use FTP (like Filezilla) or your host control panel’s File Manager to rename or delete the theme folder. That will deactivate it and when you log in and go to the Themes page, it will switch to the default theme.
For any FTP program (like Filezilla) you have to have a FTP account, and you enter your domain name and credentials to log in. Then you can transfer files from your computer to your server, or rename or delete files on the server.

If you can, you could try the Health Check plugin to see what might be set up wrong in your configuration. You can also use Troubleshooting mode to disable plugins just for the admin user, without affecting your site visitors in order to determine if one of the plugins is causing the problem.
