Feature request : 1st attachment only

I’m building a site which relies on a thumbnail image for each post. For one reason and another, I need to directly call the first attachment for each post, as opposed to using a featured image.

I’d like to have this image display in the columns, but the only option available is to show all attachments, which, since they’re stacked vertically, and there are around 20 per post, makes the screen unmanageable.

It would be really great if the following could be implemented :

1. a switch / slider to determine if all attachments should be shown, or a certain number of them.

2. horizontal display of the attachments rather then vertical.
