IT would be nice that if I was intending to go to an admin URL and I need to login first, that it would redirect to the intended URL after login.

That’s how it works. Do you go to site health when you follow this link?
http://example.com/wp-admin/tools.php?page=health-check
OK it was a plugin blocking the method. anything that hides wp-admin kills the redirect method I guess.
