Hello,
The size used for the featured image depends on your theme. Theme use features image as a thumbnail, as a header, sometimes they just don’t use them. It really depends. On my themes, I always use the Medium size. But many themes create their own size. It’s all fine. When you pick this featured image, there is no choice of the size. The theme will choose it.
Check your WordPress dashboard’s details, all the information is sum-up there. You might see an image size called “feature” something, in that case that would be it.
Hi,
Thanks for such a quick reply Jordy,
My situation is:
– I define the largest size used on my website as 800×600
– I then upload 1600×1200 so the plugin can create retina images
I create a post and want to add feature image from the media library. The only image I can see there is 1600×1200. I do not know how my theme is going to handle it. So I do not know if the theme is going actually to resize it or not. I think that yes because the image is probably about 600×400 on the actual page.
Question is:
1 – If the theme resizes down the image I picked from the media library then the plugin is going to create the retina image?
2 – Is it possible that the theme does not resize it (but instead just displays the image smaller by css style) and in that case the plugin cannot create the image. Do I then have to manually upload 3200×2400 ?
regards,
Yeah, your theme used the image size of its choice, it’s normal 🙂 Everything is normal.
1 – If the theme resizes down the image I picked from the media library then the plugin is going to create the retina image?
The retina plugin always create the retina images for all the image sizes. And featured image are using one of those image sizes. It’s no pb!

I am sure the theme is more clever than that. It would never use the full-size image for anything, it shouldn’t. Best is to check. If you don’t know how, just share your URL here.
So this is the portfolio page: http://standalonestands.co.uk/portfolio/. It shows images in 3 colums. I have no influence on the image size here other than changing the number of columns.
If you click on any of the portfolio items you will get single item page. The picture here is as per media settings – large image 620×930 – this is what I have set up in media settings and this is the size I want to use. however the image is added as featured image and I can only add 1240×1860 image (which I uploaded in the first place).
I have not run the plugin yet. So my question is what is your plugin going to do here? Nothing? Since the 1240×1860 (large is already there)
thanks for you help
Looks like you are using huge images (actually full-size) for those tiny thumbnails, indeed. Not sure why.
My plugin doesn’t make any sense right now in your config. It looks like you have a sun in your room, burning your things, but you are thinking about installing a LED light as well 😉
Better to clean this up, use appropriate image sizes. Maybe you should check your theme documentation or contact the author. Retina should come after everything is nice and ready.
