• I have been using the 2020 theme for about 2 years without problems – other than my lack of expertise.

In the last week or so, if I edit an already published post or page and then click UPDATE the feature image is no longer anywhere to be seen.

Similarly, if I do a new post, including a feature image and probably text and other images, when I publish, the Featured image disappears?? I notice in all instances if I set the feature image and then IMMEDIATELY publish it works OK, but if I do anything else after that, no feature image.

I contacted Bluehost my hoster, and they couldn’t help, though they were able to reproduce the same problem. We disabled all plugins and the theme and the problem persisted.

I updated the PHP (is that right?) but no difference. In the end the support person gave up.

I’ve got WordPress 6.4.2 and as far as I can tell all plugins and the theme are up to date.

As you may have gathered I don’t have a lot of technical expertise, but I know how it has worked for the last two years, and it’s not like this.

    I would appreciate your help.

    Thanks
    Greg

  • First off, it’s great that you’ve kept everything up to date, including your theme and PHP. That’s always a good step. Now, since you’ve already tried disabling plugins and the theme, and the issue still persists, this does sound a bit tricky. Here are a few more things you could look into:

    1. Double-checking Theme Updates: Sometimes updates can slip by unnoticed. Just to be sure, could you check once more if there’s any pending update for the Twenty Twenty theme?
    2. Permissions Can Be Pesky: File permissions on your server might be causing a hiccup. This is something Bluehost might be able to check for you. It’s about making sure your website has the right permissions to manage and display images.
    3. Media Settings in WordPress: Have a quick peek at Settings > Media in your dashboard. Nothing should be out of the ordinary, but it’s worth a look.
    4. The Right Image Format and Size: Are your images the usual JPEGs or PNGs, and not too large? Sometimes, if an image is too big, it can cause unexpected issues.
    5. A Fresh WordPress Core: Since plugins and theme aren’t the culprits, the core WordPress files might need a refresh. You can download the latest WordPress version from the official site and replace the wp-includes and wp-admin folders via FTP. Don’t worry, this won’t erase your content.
    6. That Tricky .htaccess File: This file can sometimes cause weird issues. You might want to reset it to the default WordPress .htaccess configuration. Again, this is something you might want Bluehost’s help with if you’re not too comfy doing it yourself.
    7. Keep an Eye on Browser Errors: If you can, try using your browser’s developer tools (usually the F12 key) and check if there are any errors popping up when you edit or publish a post.
    8. Reaching Out to the Theme Folks: The Twenty Twenty theme has a support forum on the WordPress site. Maybe others have had this issue, or the theme developers can provide some insights.
    9. Backup and Restore: If you have a backup from before the problem started, and you’re okay with rolling back to that point, it could be a solution. But remember, this might undo some recent changes on your site
