Featured image not working for one-post selection

I am generating a page with random post with the WP Show Posts. There is always just one post with a picture and some text, but it is always random.

The theme is set up to pick up the first pic and set it as a featured image. It is then shown dimmed on the dimmed bar at the top (see http://thesugarjane.iceiy.com/summertime/ for example). It works perfectly on a single post page.

However, the same does not work on the ‘random post’ page. The picture is there, but it is not selected as featured. Is there anything I can do to make it work?

Ideally I would also love to generate post title from the title of the selected post, but this is optional, I can live without that.
