Featured Posts Images

I’m trying to figure our how to get an image in the featured posts section like you see in the theme preview. I’ve tried setting a featured image in a post etc. but nothing seems to work. On my site all you see is an empty pain with no image and just some text for the featured post. What do I have to do to get the images to appear?
