This ended up being a problem with wordpress’ sample post. For some reason lately its published date is in the future and your theme won’t let us select featured categories unless they have published posts.
You probably don’t need to check for published posts as we are selecting the category. I often don’t have published posts as I’m going through all of a theme’s settings. Let me select the categories I want and I’ll put posts in there later……
