    Hi there,

All 3700 images in my media library show ‘file path not found’ and I am looking for a more or less fast way to reestablish those links.
Backstory: I had a problem with access to my webpage and my hosting company in trying to fix the issue replaced some or all core files but also seemed to have deleted or overwritten my uploads folder. As I found out just now, the ‘uploads’ folder is excluded from their backups due to size but I have the originally uploaded images in various places on my computer.

The question is now, how do I restore all those images, does Ewww store the optimized versions of the originals somewhere? Do I just ftp upload the folders with the original images to the WP-content folder and ewwww will relink them automatically or do I have to upload all 3700 through WP media library and basically start from scratch.

Thank you for any help you can provide!
    Sven

Sorry, EWWW doesn’t store a copy of your files at all, to avoid bloat.
So here is what I would do.

If you have a copy of your uploads (the way they were sorted into folders like 2014/06/ and 2016/04/ and such, go ahead and just upload them.

Otherwise, it’s going to be a little more tedious, but doable. What needs to happen is for the originals to be uploaded back into the folders as they are listed in the WP attachment metadata. Here’s where EWWW can help. Turn on EWWW’s debugging option, and switch the Media Library to list mode, and you’ll see the attachment metadata highlighted in yellow for each image. The third or fourth line for each one will tell you what subfolders the images were in, and how they were named (WP will replace spaces or any restricted characters with dashes).
Find your images locally, and upload them via FTP to the locations indicated in the metadata.

Once you’ve got them all, scroll through everything in your media library to make sure they are all there (your thumbnails are probably still going to be missing).

At this point, you’re ready to run the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin on your library, and you should have your thumbnails and all the resizes back again.

Then go invest in a proper backup solution. There are a lot of good ones, but I use ManageWP with storage on Amazon S3.
