• Trying to balance site speed with protection, I used Malcare instead of WordFence. It appeared to be fine until I was alerted to a few altered files on one of the many sites I had connected.

“That’s ok” I thought, “I’ll inspect the affected files”. But there was no way for me to find which files were altered. My options involved paying a ridiculous amount of money for a paid plan just to find out which files were altered, or pay to have the Malcare people fix it for me. And as a developer, I didn’t need the latter.

So, the upshot is: Malcare does whatever it does, and then when you need details, you have to pay.

As a result, I’m moving the entire fleet of websites to something else.

    Hey @marktfcs,

Thank you for taking the time to review us.

We want to clarify that our WordPress repository page clearly mentions that malware cleanup is a premium feature, while the free version of MalCare includes scanning, firewall, and login protection. This is also explained in our Free vs Paid comparison video and highlighted in the section detailing MalCare’s free features.

That said, we truly value your feedback, and I’ll be sharing it with our team so we can make this information even more prominent and help avoid any confusion in the future.

You might need to read the review again.

What I expected was to be able to see which files were deemed to be changed. That’s all. Anything more than that, like a comparison between expected file contents and actual file contents (like the Linux diff command) for decision the making process, would have been a huge help. But I would have settled for a list of files.

Your system essentially said: “Something is bad”; with absolutely nothing to back that up. Was it true? Was it a false positive? Was it a lie to make money? I don’t know. There was no way to tell.

Anyway, I only added the reference to malware clean up for the sake of completeness.

    Hey @marktfcs,

In the free version of MalCare, the scan alerts you if malware is detected but does not list the specific files or show the exact infected code. Those detailed insights (like file-level and code-level information) are part of our premium plan.

That said, if you’re ever unsure whether a detection is genuine or could be a false positive, you don’t have to rely on the message alone. You can reach out to our support team anytime at support[@]malcare[.]com, and we’ll review the flagged files for you and confirm if they are truly malware.

I really appreciate your feedback, and I’ll be sharing it with our team so we can look at ways to make the results clearer and helpful in the future.
