• Hi tere, this is for a site that’s been using WF for a while.

I noticed that unlike other sites running WP firewall, this site has NO Rules under Rules section.

Plus when I try to whitelist URL, it doesn’t work.

I tried to deactivate & uninstall & reinstall WF. Also tried disabling firewall and turning it back on, hoping to put it back to learning mode or something. nothing worked.

    Can you please help?

I think firewall may be blocking IPN connection from paypal so I was trying to add paypal.com into whitelist but ran into this mess.

    Thank you.

  • Hi bulewold,
While you are on the “Wordfence > Firewall” page, please check the browser console for any JavaScript errors.

I suggest checking (Wordfence > Live Traffic) and filter the traffic by “Blocked by Firewall” to make sure that there isn’t any request related to PayPal IPN got blocked, if so, you can whitelist it directly from the same page.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

I found this under ‘Console error’

    SyntaxError: expected expression, got ‘;’

I also currently have live traffic off.

    Thank you.

Please share a screenshot showing this error in the console, it will be helpful if you can track the source of JS file that has this syntax error.

Also, such JS errors are caused mainly due to a plugin conflict, so I suggest deactivating all other plugins and re-check this issue.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

    Here’s a screenshot. It’s under admin.php file it seems…

And this is a live site so I can’t really deactivate all plugins… that’s just not an option at this point. If I can’t figure it out, I can clone it to toubleshoot.. let me know if you have any other ideas?

I have multiple sites running very similar settings & plugins and this is ONLY site with this issue… weird….

Another thing to try is refreshing the firewall rules manually, please check (Wordfence > Diagnostics) page and look for “Connectivity” section, this is to make sure your server can connect to Wordfence servers successfully. After that, scroll down the page and click on “Manually refresh firewall rules”.

P.S. ask your web host if they provide “staging environment” for your website or can help in cloning it to a testing/debugging environment easily.

    Thanks.

    Connectivity = OK

I did manual reset. And firewall page now says using WF community firewall rules.

But I’m still not able to add whiltelist URL….
Nor being able to put WF firewall into Learning Mode…

Is there a way I can completely reset WF so that it think it’s on a new website and will go into Learning Mode automatically? I think that might fix the issue all-together?

Also, I actually have my own server managed by hosting company… I haven’t really used staging environment… I just used installatron to clone it if I needed to do test on live sites… but that takes a while… 🙁 so I try not to do it often.

It sounds like a typical JS conflict to me and I’m afraid to tell that you really need to disable all your other plugins and re-check this issue then re-enable them one by one till you figure out the culprit, also it may be a conflict with any of the browser’s extensions/add-ons, so you should also try using another browser with non of these installed (for example, Chrome incognito mode).

    Thanks.
