• Gutenberg was a very bad idea from the beginning. It took away the simplicity of doing updates, the whole reason WordPress became a success to begin with. Despite constant warnings from users and other developers, the WordPress team saw fit to continue in the direction of Gutenberg.

Now I’m seeing everywhere poor everyday users asking what happened to their site, why they can’t edit their content, and what to do. The number of people who have downloaded this plugin shows the fatal error the WordPress team made in forcing everyone to go in the direction of Gutenberg. They would have been better off leaving Gutenberg as its own plugin or just letting the countless page builders handle the fancy stuff. This plugin is a lifesaver for millions of people, but how long until they stop updating it?

Shame on the WordPress team for ruining the simplicity of WordPress. We shouldn’t have to use a plugin to bring that simplicity back.

Well said. Folks, do a search for ‘how to disable gutenberg’ and you’ll find many good ways to accomplish that (my favorite is a simple entry in functions.php).

But to the original point – having to jump through hoops (which may or may not exist in the future) to have the editor / environment that made WP so popular to begin with is… well… nonsensical and flabbergasting.

An (essentially) knife edge cut over like this is a huge bet, which may, due to the technical environment / limitations, turn out to be simply a fad.

Gutenberg absolutely should have been the plugin.
