But to add just two social icons I would prefer not to add an extra plugin. So you confirm Fontawesome is not included in Ixion?

No, it’s not. But it supports displaying icons from most social media websites. You can read more about that under the Social Links Menu section of the theme’s support page:

However, for those icons to work you’ll need to have the Jetpack plugin installed.

Jetpack is already installed but I would like to add social icons on the footer.

Since the Ixion theme has a widgets area in the footer you can add social icon there with this Jetpack widget:
