force_thumbnail=true from Gallery Posts

Is there a way to force a thumbnail from Gallery posts? force_thumbnail=true works fine for individual images in posts but does not pickup the first image from gallery posts.
I know I can add a featured image but I don’t like how they show on individual posts.
