Forced to use WP EDIT

    When upgrading to WP 3.9 (or upgrading TinyMCE), I received warnings that TinyMCE was no longer supported and that I must use WP EDIT. The warnings were like none I have seen before, and much different than for version compatibility issues. I do not remember the exact wording, but it was clear that TinyMCE would no longer going to work or be supported. I therefore uninstalled TinyMCE from all of our sites and replaced it with the inferior WP EDIT. My brother’s companies did the same. Now I see that the latest version TinyMCE “does indeed” work on 3.9. I tested it on one of our sites and it was OK.

    I’m not sure whether or not to go back and replace all WP EDIT instances with TinyMCE. If I do, I will have to reconfigure the TinyMCE menus.

    QUESTION: I feel that, for future reference, some direction is needed where TinyMCE and WP EDIT are concerned. Will TinyMCE continue to be a viable plugin for WordPress? I read the following but it didn’t help: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/wp-edit-and-wordpress-39-please-read?replies=3

    Hi Wuppy,

    You are mixing up a few things:

    • TinyMCE is an external HTML editor, which is a separate project from WordPress, but it is bundled to the WordPress core (not as a plugin)
    • TinyMCE Advanced is a plugin, which lets you show more of TinyMCE buttons, which are hidden by default by the WordPress team, and also lets you re-arrange them
    • Ultimate TinyMCE is a plugin that was similar in function to TinyMCE Advanced, but is no longer working with WordPress 3.9 and the developer advised to install the WP Edit plugin instead
    • WP Edit is a plugin from the author of Ultimate TinyMCE, which works with WordPress 3.9, however some important features (re-arranging icons if I recall correctly) are paid

    Right here, you are on the TinyMCE Advanced’s support forum.
    It’s up to you to decide, which plugin to use and if you even need a plugin.

    YES, thanks for explaining this so well. I hope users take the time to read and understand it. Too bad that WordPress did not offer details like this instead of just a issuing a WARNING during upon upgrading the core.
