Forcing http to https and non-www. to www.

Hi,

I’m receiving lots of conflicting information about forcing http to httpS and non-www. to www.

Some say it is enough to just modify the URL’s in WordPress under General Settings to obtain the correct paths, but others say you must set the URL’s in WordPress and add code to your .htaccess file.

This is a new site/domain so I don’t have any existing content that needs redirecting.

You can make it https://www. by adding the following to your .htaccess file.
```
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.example.com%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
```
This will redirect

http://example.com
http://www.example.com
https://example.com

to

https://www.example.com

Having www and non-www running with no redirect causes Google to believe the site is two different ones (duplicate content) – which hurts your Google ranking.

You can make it https:// by adding the following to your .htaccess file.
```
RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.*)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%1/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
```
This will redirect

http://example.com
http://www.example.com
https://www.example.com

to

https://example.com

You can make it https://www. by adding the following to your .htaccess
```
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.

Thank you for your help.

To clarify….to force httpS I insert this code:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.*)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%1/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

and to force www I insert this code:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.example.com%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Do I need to surround both blocks of code with:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

code

</IfModule>

I’m not entirely sure how the code sits within the .htaccess file.

Add the following to the top of your .htaccess file.
```
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.example.com%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
```
NOTE: Make sure you change www.example.com to your domain.
