In the visual editor click the paste from Word icon (on the second row of icons).

Thanks David. I found a whole row of edit buttons that were hidden that include the word icon. But even when I use the word icon, it still makes my single space doc, double space. I can edit it but it is quite annoying. Any other suggestions?

I’ve not tried or tested it myself, but apparently you can post directly from Word.
The other week someone was asking about blogging directly from Word (he’d been doing that in the past). While I think that’s odd give this a read from How To Geek.

You’ll need to enable XML-RPC in your Dashboard >> Settings >> Writing

If you do try this, I suggest you play with some draft posts first.
In the past anything from Microsoft Word into WordPress was asking for trouble…
