Formatting System emails for registering

When someone signs up to our website an email is sent to confirm the email and notify the visitor once they have been approved. This email is very plain with very simple texts fonts sizes and other formats, I was wondering if there was a way to change these formats, I am not a developer so am not sure the best way to do this.
