Forminator groups confuses this plugin

You are correct — this is how our integration currently works when dealing with grouped fields from Forminator. At the moment, wpDataTables can only load the entire group’s data into a single cell. It cannot “drill down” further to display or sort individual fields from inside the group.

This is definitely an interesting idea for improvement. We encourage you to submit it as a feature suggestion here:
