That’s a great question. One way you could do that is by setting up a separate product for the free sample and one for the paid, full product. Then create a third one using the “grouped” product type.
You can then combine the sample and full product together in the grouped product. Users can then add whichever one they want to the cart.
Nico has a tutorial on how to do this with subscriptions, but you could apply it to samples too.

That’s one way to approach it and doesn’t require a separate plugin.
