Freezed process + Server “Reached Resource Limit”

Hello,

Never known any issue with your excellent plugin… until the last 2.3.0 update.

Now, each time we attempt to launch an optimization, the process freezes (all spinner-2x.gif rotate infinitely) and our server returns the following warning – while nothing has changed on our website that could explain the present issue:

Resource Limit Is Reached
The website is temporarily unable to service your request as it exceeded resource limit. Please try again later.

For more clarity, here is two screenshots:

By the way, the installed WordPress version is 5.1.1–fr_FR and, of course, all caches (W3 Total Cache, CloudFlare, browser) have been scrupulously purged, and even several times, but without success.

Consequently and with no offence, could you please check again the stability of your last WP-Optimize 2.3.0 update.

Almost three days later with no response…

Hi and many thanks for your light speed support (second degree humour)!

Obviously, it appears that integrating the brand new ‘Image Optimization’ feature drains out some servers memory – unexpected issue we had to solve by ourselves.

And for users that would encounter the same problem, we suggest to cautiously edit their wp-config.php file and to increase their PHP memory limit up to 512 MB:

define( ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘512M’ );

That said, the 2.3.0 WP-Optimize version chows down so much bandwidth that the trick does not even work every time…

Sorry about the delay here @tapinews

I will investigate why there is a sudden spike in memory usage. Image compression is designed to not use any bandwidth/resources unless you are actually compressing something. I will do some benchmarking to ensure this actually is the case and post back here.

Please note that, independently of using the brand new ‘Image Optimization’ feature, the freezed process + Server “Reached Resource Limit” occurs as soon as we click on the WP-Optimize lateral menu (see the screenshot below):

– Click & Freeze!

Hi,

Your screenshot shows 20 PHP processes running. If you go to your Apache log to see what incoming requests are there at the same time, what are they? WP-O is architected so that there shouldn’t be more than one or two WP-O ones (per open browser portal). So, it’d be good to see what’s going on there. If you note the wall-clock time of the clicks you make, it should then be straightforward to correlate with the log.

First of all, we must precise that the freezed process + server “Reached Resource Limit” not exactly occurs when we click on the WP-Optimize lateral menu, but as soon as we select the WP-Optimize/Database submenu (see the screenshot below):

– Click & Freeze! (2)

Otherwise, and much to our surprise, the Apache log reflects no particular incoming request at the same time, meanwhile UptimeRobot.com warns us about a “DOWN monitor (Connection Timeout)” + “Loop Detected (508)”.

If PHP processes start up, but aren’t logged, then there’s something broken in your server’s logging setup – please can you speak to the web hosting company?

Unless they’re not related – i.e. not coming over Apache/HTTP. You can verify that using the “Network” panel in your browser’s web developer tools… it will log all HTTP requests back to your server. Are there 20 of them that ultimately go to PHP resources (i.e. *not* to static files like CSS, images) when you click the page?

We’ve not been able to reproduce excessive memory usage on any of our testing setups yet (using Query Monitor – https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/query-monitor/ – to measure memory use).

So, we need some more info from the specific site you’re meeting problems on. If you turn on WP_DEBUG in wp-config.php (i.e. make it true), or if you have access to a PHP error log that shows the line where WP runs out of memory, then, what is that line? If you use Query Monitor to show the peak memory use on various dashboard pages, inside and outside WP-O, what does it show?

@tapinews Do you get the problem still if you try the just-released WP-O 2.3.2? We found a problem whereby on non-ASCII image names, several 404 requests could be made simultaneously on the images tab. (But it sounded like there is no such thing showing in your log, and you weren’t on that tab anyway?)
