Is there anyway to make this capability available on the front-end? I ask because we have a Buddypress site and we never want users to enter the traditional wp-admin section. Is there a way to do this functionality on the front-end? Maybe through a short code or something?

As default there is no way to do that. However you can try to implement an interface and use it for the front side, but might not be so easy. You can use the plugin code as example to adapt it for what you need.
