• Uncertain of even the right question…but would appreciate your helping me get clearer.

Have a few WordPress sites. Been using a web guy, but he didn’t
“do right by me” so I’m trying to (for now) take control of my websites and get to a place where I can build/develop my WordPress sites. By no means a WordPress guru, but generally know my way around and how

My sites are using Genesis Themes, but they seem less friendly to the “layman” user. For instance, when I get onto the dashboard, I can’t find the “header.” Someone intro’d me to iThemes with the Builder tool. Seems easier to use.

All that to say…if I want to be able to work with my WP sites, but without too much complication…what themes, builders, etc. should I be working with.

  • That’s a hard question, because all themes are different… I’ve never looked at Genesis so can’t say. I would recommend that you look at the series of tutorial at http://devpress.com/

The courses at lynda.com may be helpful

There are a few books of course, like digging into wordPress and WordPress for dummies.

I also wrote a few tutorials to accompany the class that I teach. I would look at the custom theme dev one that runs in three parts.

Hopefully that gives you lots of ideas where to start.

    Best of luck.

Genesis also has an extensive support forum, with tutorials specific to each child theme, as well as http://dev.studiopress.com.

Some child themes use the custom header option- some don’t. It depends on which one you have.

All themes are different and most require a little more than general knowledge. Books and tutorials are a great suggestion. You could also try the “trial and error” approach, but if you do so, make sure to save a copy of the page you are editing.

If you have a specific question, I am more than happy to look at it for you.
