FTP Access Information Request on Updates

    I am working on a site that is hosted on someones personal server. Once I complete the installation manually I am unable to update plugins or install new themes without entering in the FTP login information. It’s also blocking access to timthumb plugin. Can someone please direct me to the right place to inform the host of which permission to check for the account?

    It’s a customers friend who has a server. Non of the major hosts have this problem any longer. I am assuming it has something to do with the permissions on the server for this account, but not sure which areas to advise the host to check and update.
