    Hello,

I just paid a visit our website host and looked through our file directory and noticed quiet the accumulation of files within our updraft directory folder. There are a series of files titled log…. and backup_… When looking at these files further, they have a different file extensions. I’m thinking I can sort through these files and clean this up a little bit? But I’m not sure as to which files I can delete… And if it would be safest to delete them in groups according to their modification dates… say delete the series of 10 files with a modification date of December 22, 2014…

Or maybe this is a bit more complicate than I think, and maybe a little over my head? Your insight on this would be greatly appreciate.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The files titled backup_… are the actual backup files for your site. File backups are .zip, and database backups are .gz. The log files are created by each backup, logging the operation and any warnings or errors that might occur.

The best way to delete these files is go to the UpdraftPlus Settings page, ‘Existing Backups’ tab. You should see a list of backups, with the option to delete them. Otherwise, it is best to delete them by modification date.

Also, if you set up a remote storage location (A safer option than keeping the backups on your webserver), UpdraftPlus deletes the local copies by default.

    Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I did a little more digging and found this thread that describes exactly what I am experiencing!

Now I see that this post is over 2 years old, and that the thread explained that an update was supposed to resolve this issue… but I seem to still be having this issue…

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    Hi Erica,

The other thread is referring to .tmp files… the start of the filenames can be the same as yours, but to know if it’s the same issue, I’d need to see a list of full filenames. The changes mentioned in that thread to clean up .tmp files better did go through. I suspect for yours, the best thing to do would be to press the ‘Rescan local folder’ button in UD’s “Existing Backups” tab – then UD will start tracking them again (assuming they’re the sort of file I’m guessing), and then delete old ones again after a fresh backup.

    Hi David,

Awesome, thank you! I went to the “Existing Backups” tab within UD and did as you said. I did a refresh for the local backups and it updated to show the countless backups still hanging out that I was referring to… I’ll keep an eye on this to see if it keeps up on tracking them again…

    Thank you,
    Erica
