Try this (will probably need some adjustment)

}

Are we talking background-color, or are you trying to spread the content over the full width of the page? If so, this Snippet works a treat.

Still experimenting, try this:

.container {
    width: 95%;
}
#main-wrapper {
    width: 100% !important ;
}

If that helps, will have to adjust width of featured images and footer too. Seems to work responsively but may need some tweaks using @media
