It could indeed be related to memcached as I noticed a W3TC error message on dashboard related to memcached. memcached was not enabled on the server but after I enabled it, the error went away.

Thank you for the confirmation and I am gad the problem is resolved.
The reason for this is that you’ve had the Memcached selected as a caching method for some modules, and the Memcached could not be found by the W3TC.
