Hi,
it is best to do it using a plugin like Say What? https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/say-what/ it will allow you to change almost any phrase in WPAdverts without modifying original files (so the changes will not be overwritten on update).
One note, when you will be translating the phrase in the “Text Domain” field enter “wpadverts”.

I tried that but can’t get it to work. The plugin pages suggest the text needs to already be marked up for translation and not sure if this string is.

This phrase is properly marked for translation in wpadverts/includes/gallery.php file on line 78 https://plugins.trac.ww.wp.xz.cn/browser/wpadverts/trunk/includes/gallery.php#L78.
