We have an internal site (i.e. not viewable from outside the company) that includes a LOT of PDF files. With your plugin they always result in this error: “Sorry, we were unable to find the document at the original source. Verify that the document still exists. You can also try to download the original document by clicking here.”

Clicking on “here” displays the document exactly as we would like to see it, i.e. embedded in the page. From what I understand the error is a result of a failed URL validation due to the document being unreachable by Google. You suggest in your Notes/Help that it is possible to disable URL validation in the Advanced Settings, but I don’t see how to do that. Of course it’s possible that I’m misunderstanding what you meant there.

So is it possible to disable URL validation so that the internal PDF file can be displayed without the need for an extra click after the error?

  • Hi there, and thanks for reading the documentation before reaching out for help… a small act of relief for one-person volunteer dev teams. 🙂

So long as the files exist on a public network (ie., I would be able to reach them from anywhere if I knew the URL, not stored on a private or protected space) you can use GDE even on a localhost or private install of WordPress.

In GDE 2.5.x the setting is “Check for errors before loading viewer”. Turning this off has other consequences, such as the plugin won’t be able to report the file download size in the download link. But so long as the file is indeed public (even if the site isn’t), it should work with this setting turned off.

I had actually already disabled that, but was continuing to have a problem (sorry for not making that clear).

From what you’re saying here, though, it seems that it’s the location of the PDF’s that’s the problem. Some of the PDF’s contain proprietary information and thus are kept in a space accessible only from within our network. That sounds like a deal breaker for this particular site.

That said, I do like this plugin and will likely be using it on other, more open sites. Thanks for all your work, and for your quick response.

Indeed, the location of the plugin isn’t an issue, but the location of the files is. Google must be able to fetch the contents for conversion. GDE 2.5.x does have a “secure documents” feature that helps prevent most downloading, but it’s not 100% secure in all cases as the files do need to reside in a public directory (even if that location isn’t published). More details about that feature are here, if interested (and you haven’t read that already).
