Hi, @q292u.
1) “The posts on my site all contain an external image url”
– Are these images in the CONTENT of the post?
– Are that just URL or a IMG tag?
2) “Can this plugin read the URL from within the post and set it as the featured image?”
– Yes
3) “I’ve tried setting the “use first post” option and hitting update on the post, but that doesn’t work”
– You mean “use the first image as featured image”, right?
– After update the post, what happens with the “Featured Image from URL” box? Is it filled?
4) I assume because the image isn’t in the gallery?
– Sorry, what’s a gallery?
5) “I will need to manually copy the image url from each post into the “external url” box”
– No, you don’t need to that.

1. yes, in the post content with a link wrapped in a link (originated from an rss feed)
2. Doesn’t seem to do anything.
3. Absolutely nothing. Empty.
4. I meant “media library”
5. That’s a relief
Sorry about the rushed nature of my original post!
OK, @q292u.
The post editor has 2 tabs: “Visual” and “Text”.
Copy the “Text” content of some post and send that to “[email protected]”, please. I will try to simulate your problem.

Hi. Actually, I’ve just discovered that it works, but ONLY if I edit each post individually. What I really want to be able to do is select a number of draft posts and hit “edit”, then change status to “published”, hit go, and they all pull in the featured image.
Hi, @q292u.
You can vote on that as a next feature.
I’m sure it will be implemented soon.
Hi, @q292u.
It was implemented as a new Premium feature.
