From your description it sounds like something new came in with WPML 4.2.0 and I haven’t worked with that version yet.

Yes indeed it is because of WPML plugin i just rolled back the plugin to previous version 4.1.3 and subcategory pages started working.

I have an open support ticket with WPML for this -> seems it has not been fully acknowledged yet, but there is for sure a problem.

Currently the best work around is to disable YoastSEO and enable the “No category base WPML” plugin. Just flush your permalinks after you have disabled YoastSEO.
