Getting Google sitemap to work

    Hi all, I’m fairly new to WordPress and all so please bear that in mind.

    I’m trying to get Google Sitemaps to work on my site, I’ve signed up with Google and have verified it with them by uploading an HTML file. Also I’ve downloaded the plugin for sitemaps here.

    In my dashboard, Options, Sitemap I press Rebuild Sitemap and get the following error:
    Could not write into /home/wiimdav1/public_html/sitemap.xml

    Could not write into /home/wiimdav1/public_html/sitemap.xml.gz

    Am I supposed to create these (empty) files or does Google do that? When looking in my ftp program (Filezilla) I don’t think I even have that location, Could someone please help me get this sorted as I would be extremely grateful.

    from the instructions on the plugin page that you linked to:

    The script needs write access to your Blog directory. Check out the WordPress Codex or have a look at the FAQ for help.

    in laymens language that means this, and its why youre seeing that message:

    The plugin is trying to create a file called sitemap.xml, etc.. It cant, since it doesnt have permissions to write to the directory.

    Yes, you do. you just dont know it. Thats where your blog is installed.

    I still can’t get it to work. What I’ve done is opened Filezilla and went into the file attributes of google sitemap plugin, thens set it to 666.

    When I press Rebuild map in my WordPress dashboard it takes me to another page and a message saying “Cannot load sitemap.php” What is the problem now?

    You don’t need to set the attributes of the plugin. You need to set the attributes of those two files (sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz). If they don’t exist, then create them in your blog’s root directory (just upload an empty text file with those names). Then set them to 666 each. This is the safest approach.
