Getting Widgets to align Horizontally

I was not able to get the style of menu I want with the default menu tools, the theme I have allows for the disabling of the default menu and to replace it with a custom menu made of widgets.

I am trying to create a widget menute… just simple HTML code inside of text widgets.

One problem… the sidebar area used for these widgets… has seperate widgets stacking vertically. I want them to align horizontally… that is all I want… I really thought this would be simple.

But I have been trying things for about twelve hours now…

I just want… the black buttons, as they are to go next too the picture buttons. The black buttons do not have enough visual information to take upa button the size of the buttons for the original comics… that is a last-resort option and it would waste a looooooot of space.
