Very basic animated GIF conversion has been available since version 4.6 was released in April. Like other video conversions it requires FFMPEG or LIBAV on your server. For now the GIF is actually replaced by the MP4, but in the future I plan to retain the original file and treat GIFs as much like videos as I can.
That is awesome! being able to keep both files and the user could download the gif when right-click on the player, when embedding in twitter, like giphy does. I know it needs FFMPEG (and https if you want to embed the player in Twitter).
Also option to convert the mp4 back to gif so have both files to offer to the user if they want to download it…
