Google Apps Doesn't Recieve Admin Email

I know admin notification email is an issue for a lot of folks, and I’ve read the FAQ several times, however I have a wrinkle which may effect how I resolve my issue.
My client uses Google Apps for email. I receive the admin notification email to external email addresses but not email addresses hosted at the primary domain (which is handled by Google).
To get around this, I setup a forward on my domain that routes the notifications back to the client however this is an ugly band-aid.
Do you see conflicts with using this plugin with a domain that has MX records pointing to Google? Previous webmaster had installed the SMTP WP plugin and inputted (incorrectly) Gmail settings. I deactivated the plugin.
Should I attempt to use this plugin and use (the correct) Google SMPT settings or should I take another path?
