Hi word6w!
You can add these lines in robot.txt file to block Googlebot from indexing the images of the staging site:
User-agent: Googlebot-Image
Disallow: /
Check this guide for more information.
Also, you shouldn’t worry about the images duplication issue, according to this article, there is no penalty for that.
Thanks,
Alaa

So I deleted the stage site, why can I still see my product page as public. I thought once the root folder is deleted, all the pages in the stage site should be deleted right? for example: domain.com/123456/?product=item still visible.
Creating the stage site under a domain subdirectory is very damaging to any sites working with SEO because contents are not gated behind a login page. All published page still show but using a different url slug.

Is this a question?
If you deleted the staging site and its still there I would expect caching issues. Make sure you purge your cache.
When the site is deleted, the images are not available anymore. If they are still there please contact us. It’s not possible if you deleted the staging site by using the Actions > Delete button

As my colleague already mentioned in his reply: There will be no duplicate content issue for loading duplicate images from another path! Please read the link he sent to you.
And the textual content is behind a login form. Additionally the site is no-index and will not be indexed by google if you should ever disable the authentication form.
So, no! There is no duplicate content and SEO issue by creating a staging site with wp staging.

Thanks the reply. For SEO, the example I gave is not gated behind a login page when I incognito mode attempted to see that page. Is there a reason why it happened? All caches were cleared as well. And I did use Delete function as noted.
