I have taken over a website from its original owner. He installed Site Kit years ago but never really used it. Now I can’t get access to Google Analytics because I have “insufficient permissions.”

The message in Site Kit says “Your Google account does not have sufficient permissions for this Analytics property, so you won’t be able to see stats from it on the Site Kit dashboard.” It then recommends contacting the administrator (previous owner). He does not know the email associated with the account and has no way to approve my request for access (we’ve been trying for weeks).

I can see a snapshot of our analytics within WordPress, but I want to be able to get the full report. In Tag Manager I am able to see that there are actually multiple tags on the site.

What are my options here? I don’t want to lose years of analytic data, if that’s avoidable. Any help is HUGELY appreciated.

Hi @irwin31, thanks for getting in touch. Sorry to hear you’re facing this issue. If the person who previously set up Site Kit no longer has access to the account connected in Site Kit then they won’t be able to grant you permissions to that account and properties within it so you will continue to see this error. There are a few ways this can be resolved which I will list below:

    1. The previous owner gets access to the connected Analytics account and then grants you the permissions to the account/property connected in Site Kit.
    2. You perform a Site Kit reset which will allow you to connect Site Kit yourself using an Analytics account/property you do have access to. Note that this will mean that you still won’t have access to the legacy data for the site but you will then have access from to data from the day you connected Site Kit yourself.
    3. You reach out to the folks at the Analytics Help Center who may have another way for you to recover access to the currently connected Analytics account.

I hope one of these options works for you and if you have any other Site Kit issues or questions then please do let me know and I will be happy to help!
