Google Site Kit keeps loading the Google Tag Manager cookie, even after I disable Tag Manager and disconnect it from the Site Kit dashboard.

I have already tried reconnecting all services while excluding Tag Manager, but in that case, Google Analytics does not show up or connect properly.

Is there a way to ensure that Google Tag Manager cookies are not loaded? I don’t need Google Tag Manager at all.

Thanks for reaching out @jenomal. Google Tag Manager, whether implemented via Site Kit or manually, does not set cookies on its own, although there could be tags added that can use cookies. What may be happening, is a tag manager script, or a script which may look Tag Manager related, may remain active when checking your sites source code. I’d be happy to check this for you if you’d like to share the following:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Have you tried to implement Tag Manager manually or via other means at any stage?

without accepting this consent, it does not work! but when i acepts it, google tag manager is showing as cookie

When setting up Tag Manager within Site Kit, consent for Site Kit to access your Tag Manager account may be required. That’s why you see such requests. It’s normal that you’re unable to proceed if you don’t grant access.

Once we have the above we can hopefully determine the cause. Let me now if you have any questions.

    Hi there,

I just sent the answer via the private form. However, there are a few things I need to point out:

    1. I neither need nor want to use Google Tag Manager. I already deactivated it via the Google Site Kit plugin, but it still loads cookies in the background when visiting my site.
    2. The cookie being loaded is: https://www.googletagmanager.com/. This only happens when Google Site Kit is activated.
    3. If I deactivate the Google Site Kit plugin, the cookie no longer appears.

Thanks for the additional information @jenomal. I can confirm that there is no Google Tag Manager snippet placed on your site, either via Site Kit or manually. Where the confusion may stem, is that Site Kit uses the newer Google tag to insert a Google Analytics snippet on a users site. This differs to Tag Manager.

In addition, any Google Analytics snippet placed, using either the newer Google tag (with a GT-*** prefix), or the standard measurement ID (with a G-XXX prefix), will appear as it loads from a Google Tag Manager source (see this screenshot from your sites source code).

I also confirmed this via checking your site using the tagassistant.google.com service (screenshot). You can check this yourself if you wish. You’ll notice no Google Tag Manager snippet (typically with a GTM- prefix) is evident on your site.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I’m not very experienced, but I understood that no Google Tag cookie appears when visiting my website?

What is this cookie in the Google Chrome browser about? When I load my website and check in the inspector, I see this…?

Thanks for the update @jenomal. I suspect the tool that you used to capture cookies on your site is identifying Google Analytica as a Tag Manager related cookie. I mention this as the source of the Google Analytics snippet as places via Site Kit is a googletagmanager.com URL, as per this guide.

Regardless of the above, you have nothing to worry about, as there are no tagmanager specific cookies on your site. Google Analytics does, however, it’s first party cookies only (See here).

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.

As you can see in <u>this screenshot</u> , both Google Analytics (“_ga” and “_ga_8W…”) and Google Ads (“_gcl_au”) cookies are set before consent is given.

Is there a way to block or prevent these cookies from loading until consent is granted?

Good question @jenomal. You can use a third party consent management or cookies related plugin to ensure that visitors are not until a visitor consents. We also have consent mode as a feature within Site Kit that can help ensure your site is compliant with regional cookie and tracking related policies. You’ll find more on this, and some of the consent management plugins that work natively with Site Kit below:
    https://sitekit.withgoogle.com/documentation/using-site-kit/consent-mode/

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.
